Communication Tips
Making Conversations Easier
Hearing loss affects both the listener and the speaker. Small changes in how we communicate can make a big difference. Here are some tips we often share with our patients and their loved ones.
For People With Hearing Loss
- Ask others to face you when speaking.
- Choose quieter spaces when possible.
- Let friends know if you need them to speak slower or more clearly.
- Use hearing aids or assistive devices as recommended.
For Friends and Family
- Get the person’s attention before speaking.
- Speak from 3-6 feet away (being too close or too far can distort or diminish the sound of your voice).
- Speak clearly and a little louder than usual, but don’t shout.
- Maintain eye contact and avoid covering your mouth.
- Rephrase instead of repeating if you’re not understood. Keep sentences short and simple (do not overcomplicate the message).
- Complement what you’re saying with appropriate facial expressions and gestures. Be aware of the cues and signals you may be sending with your body language.
